Group #4: Renaissance Italy Food and clothes of the Italian renaissance: FOOD: grain was the main resource of nourishment to peasants and noblemen. They subsisted primarily on wheat, oats, barley, and rye, and the most common meal was bread and vegetable soup. “peasant families ate pork, beef, or game only a few times a year”. They did this because those type of meats were expensive so they couldn’t afford to eat it every day, same with milk, butter, and hard cheeses, but what they could afford to eat was fowl and eggs. There were common foods in this case vegetables such as cabbage and watercress. Also wild carrots were popular but only in certain area’s same goes for parsnips. CLOTHES: a renaissance man’s attire consist of three basic components: a long-sleeved shirt or fine; a doublet, or close-fitting jacket, and hose that were woven stitched from cloth. 1. Wars in Renaissance Italy.
a. Preparing for wars.
- Soldiers are healthy men who were at the age of fifteen and sixty.
- A large group of soldiers must walk across the countryside dragging heavy cannons from battle to battle.
- Some Wars maybe traveling across waters to go to war and they would probably take days or months to reach there destination.
b. When traveling threw towns going to war.
- When the Armies are going to war they sometimes must go threw villages that might be in the enemies territory so they would burn the villages down and murder the towns people.
- Also the moving armies would spread diseases.
c. What are most of the wars about?
- Most wars would kingdoms going to war or a territory that is being fought over to who will own it.
- Another reason for wars is a fight for power on who will gain more power over the lands or kingdoms.
- Sometimes the wars are Religious Wars
- The final war would be peasants revolting against the landowners for slavery or money.
2. Conflicts in Renaissance Italy.
e. What are some causes of conflicts?
- Some would be thefts, crimes or murder (during the renaissance there were many crimes committed during the renaissance)
- Thefts would be stealing food o r money.
- Crimes would be mugging, murder, treason against the king or being a witch (or being suspected of being a witch).
f. The punishments for thefts, crimes or being suspected of being a witch.
- Some of the punishments are torture (there are many more but they are not going to be mentioned)
- Sometimes the punishment was for humiliation, which is when they put you in a holder for you to get food thrown at you.
- If you are accused of being a witch then you will be burned.
- Sometimes for punishment they would cut open your chest rip out your intestines and other organs (and would burn them) and then they would probably hang you or burn you.
- The final punishment is getting your head chopped off.
